Overview
This tour provides highlights of batik history, pattern designs, printing technique, women empowerment in micro economy of the community and sustainable materials traditionally used in batik production. Participants will be able to discern a fine batik from the mass produced and able to look after a fine batik to its tip top condition from the knowledge acquired during the trip.
For its significant values, Indonesian batik was inscribed into UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. Although batik comes in diverse motifs and patterns, due to time constraints and distances, this tour only focuses on Peranakan motifs and patterns.
The itinerary, including the fringe activities such as the unique culinary stops and the visits to prominent old Chinese sites, had been kept focussed on the topic to remain relevant. Hopefully this tour can bring appreciation and emotional connection between the participants and the culture, the people and the art of Peranakan batik.

To learn about the history and variety of Peranakan batik, the participants will go directly to the museum of the centre of the art, the town of Pekalongan where Peranakan batik had been adapted and produced for generations.

This third generation batik house had been producing fine batik for more than a century. The owner's tight control of the quality and artistry caused its waiting list to be more than 5 years. Their batiks sit at the pinnacle of the modern fine batik's artistry which is already becoming very scarce. Each piece with its ever increasing value, is an art collector rather than a daily outfit.

Five generation batik house, now helmed by Madam Liem Poo Hien had been producing fine batik for more than a century specialising in Hokokai and Buketan motifs. Her batik cloths are currently exhibited at Osaka Expo 2025.

Known for their 25-step process which takes around three months to complete for each piece of batik cloth, this batik family's ancestor, Mr. Liem Tjhing Hwat, journeyed through three iconic batik regions, Pekalongan, Solo and Lasem to gather the distinct colour each locale was famous for, to create a recipe passed down several centuries in the family's batik creation process.

Standing since 1818, the house was built by Oei Am who was born in 1798 in China. The house adopted the typical early 19th century Chinese house. It is well preserved and now owned and managed by the family's seventh generation. Participants are invited to enjoy afternoon snacks after a short tour around the house.

The history of Semarang city dated back to the eighth century under the old Mataram empire. It had been a port city for the longest time. Around the fifteenth century, the famous admiral Cheng Ho from China visited Semarang and founded Sam Poo Kong temple and the trade between China and the empire flourish since then.
The walkaround the old city of Semarang explores the area where the Dutch established their presence in Semarang from Jepara in the early 18th century. The buildings around the area are well preserved to reflect the nuance during the colonial period. It is a beautiful place for picture taking.

Explore the Chinatown of Semarang. Observe the heritage buildings and a visit to the famous, prominent temple of Tay Kak Sie, a Taoist temple of the Goddess of Mercy (Kwan Im), completed in 1746 and recorded during the ruling of Dao Guang Emperor of the Qing dynasty.
Semarang's Chinatown is also famous for its culinary variety, most are not halal but there are several which are.
